Interview with MinkuLul :iconminkulul:

Thank you for taking your time with the interview for AllArtSupport.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: Hello Luiza, please tell us a little bit about you. How did you begin to paint on fabric?

MinkuLul :bulletred: Hello everyone! One day I've just got fed up with not finding any interesting clothes in shops and decided to try my acrylics on... yes, my jeans :) now I paint on almost every kind of fabric, but silk is my real love.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: Which are the reasons you have made an account in deviantART? You’ve been here for almost a decade, how has your experience been so far?

MinkuLul :bulletred: My dear friend :iconmeshya: started this adventure for us two! It's a real privilege to be a part of this great community, with all of the amazing, inspiring art and lovely people.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: Could you name some of your favorite artists? (Painters, musicians, writers, etc.)

MinkuLul :bulletred: All of Art-Nouveau European artists (be sure to check out Mucha!), Amano – from Japan... and much, much more. I love Italian music – try it, it's so positive. My favorite author is Jean Giono (short story 'The Man Who Planted Trees')

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: What are your tools of the trade, what made you choose those particular things?

MinkuLul :bulletred: For silk painting – Chinese silk named Habotai – it's lovely, delicate and glossy which means that paints looks extra vibrant. As for paint, I use local polish brand, only 5 base colors. Always make the shades and color set from scratches, that's my motto :)
I've chose silk painting because it's so similar to my favorite watercolor painting... and what you actually get is a wearable piece of art. There's no greatest prize for me than seeing other people wearing my scarves. For me, painting on clothes, makes the painting more alive.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: Your colors are vibrant and joyful, what inspires your color palettes?

MinkuLul :bulletred: I love strong, cheerful colors, as I am, and always have been, enhanced by sun. I guess it creates good vibrations, makes me feel happy. I am inspired by nature, by the spring – summer time and cheerful Italian music.

silk scarf Feathers - FOR SALE by MinkuLul

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: You have several online stores where you sell your products, how is selling online for you? What are the pros and the cons of online selling from your personal experience?

MinkuLul :bulletred: Selling on-line gives a wonderful feel of independence. I love it for the opportunity of selling to different countries :) it feels wonderful to send my creations abroad :D Still, on-line potential client can't really feel the scarf, so everything comes to taking great pictures... I'm still struggling with that! Also, on-line promoting takes really a lot of time and effort.

AllArtSupport Imagine you’re in front of a blank piece of silk and your painting tools are ready. How do you start your process? Please walk us through it a little.

MinkuLul :bulletred: I put my favorite www.radioitalia.it on and start with a small sketch on a piece of paper, to find the best composition. Sometimes I do a watercolor sketch as well (if the scarf is going to be very complicated) but most of my work happens spontaneously on silk :) I learned that (as with watercolors) it's best not to 'fight' with the painting but just go with it, and change the design during the process of creation... just relax and paint what intuition tells you to.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: Where do you find inspiration for your beautiful designs?

MinkuLul :bulletred: Oh, everything may become inspiration, I just need to keep my eyes open :P For most times it is nature. I am a landscape architect and an avid cyclist; I love to get inspired by beautiful surroundings, greenery and gardens.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: I noticed that you also have a Facebook account, between deviantART and Facebook, which platform do you feel is more helpful to advertise and sell your creations?

MinkuLul :bulletred: dA works best for me! I did find some wonderful groups for painters on Facebook, but still dA seems to create more traffic for me on Etsy.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: Do you wear your scarves? How do you feel people react to them when they see them on you? Do you get many requests from people when you tell them you made it yourself?

MinkuLul :bulletred: Oh yes, I wear my scarves :) because silk is a really wonderful fabric. It keeps you warm, protects you against wind... and stays wonderfully cool during summer :) Wearing my scarves gives them more exposure too. Yep, people do notice :D I think it's mostly the design (I try to make it detailed and unique) in combination with... beautiful silky shimmering of the fabric.

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: Out of all your beautiful work, which piece are you most proud of, and why?

MinkuLul :bulletred: I really like 'White Tree of Gondor'. I designed it for myself ;) but it seems that other people like it too! Oh, there's also the 'Blue Bull' scarf, which was a great challenge!

AllArtSupport :bulletblack: If you could give a useful piece of advice to someone who is considering painting on fabric, what would it be?

MinkuLul :bulletred: Try everything: every fabric, every type of paint! You will not believe how many possibilities there are! Also, find people on-line and share your experience and ask questions! On dA there's such a lot of wonderful artist who loves to help others out :)
